CM’s Office Clarifies Police Action on Ice Cream Parlor Closing; Inspector Cites Public Safety Rules

BENGALURU: Following a complaint from an ice cream parlor owner regarding alleged harassment by the police, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) Grievance Redressal Cell has released a clarification based on a report from the Avalahalli Police Inspector.

The Complaint: Vijay Reddy, the operator of a Baskin Robbins outlet near Kittaganur Circle, had emailed the CMO alleging that the Avalahalli Police Inspector was causing trouble by forcing the shop to close at 10:00 PM. Taking note of the email, Special Duty Officers directed the concerned authorities to investigate and file a report.

Police Findings: The subsequent investigation revealed that the shop was not being targeted unfairly. The Avalahalli Police Inspector provided the following reasons for their instructions:

  • Operating Beyond Hours: The owner was reportedly keeping the shop open until 1:30 AM, violating the state-mandated business hours.
  • Public Nuisance: The outlet is located on the road leading to Maragondanahalli and Halehalli, where miscreants were gathering late at night, smoking, and causing disturbances to passersby.
  • Precautionary Measure: The police clarified that they only instructed the owner to close the shop according to government timings as a safety measure and to maintain public order.

The police have confirmed that the owner has been formally briefed on the regulations, and the action was taken solely on the grounds of security.
