New Delhi, March 15, 2026: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has officially announced the schedule for the upcoming assembly elections in four states and one union territory. Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry will go to polls between April 9 and April 29, 2026. The counting of votes and the declaration of results are scheduled for May 4. With this announcement, the Model Code of Conduct comes into effect immediately across these regions.

According to the schedule, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry will vote in a single phase on April 9. Tamil Nadu will also see a single-phase election on April 23. However, due to security concerns and the sensitivity of various regions, West Bengal will undergo a two-phase election on April 23 and April 29. A total of 17.4 crore voters across 824 constituencies are eligible to exercise their franchise. The Election Commission has planned 2.19 lakh polling stations and will deploy 25 lakh personnel to ensure a free and fair election process.
