Gangolli, March 6, 2026: Development work at Gangolli port, a major fishing hub in Udupi district, has officially started under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), bringing renewed hope to the local fishing community after years of declining catches and crumbling infrastructure.

The port has faced severe challenges for the past three to four years, including reduced fish landings, poor facilities, inadequate berthing space, and repeated damage from natural calamities. As part of the current project, construction has begun on two new fish landing platforms near the old jetty, two rest-house buildings for fishermen, and an enclosure wall around the port premises to improve security and basic amenities.

Even as new work progresses, fishermen have renewed their long-standing demand for urgent restoration of the collapsed jetty. The 379-metre-long jetty, whose reconstruction was sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹12 crore after its partial collapse in 2018, suffered a major setback in 2022 when about 50 metres of the structure fell into the sea during ongoing construction.

Following that incident, the state government appointed technical experts and obtained a report from the Central Institute of Coastal Engineering for Fisheries (CICEF). The fisheries minister approved reconstruction based on the findings. The contractor reportedly prepared to resume work in December 2023, but progress halted after senior fisheries department officials visited the site and directed design modifications and strict adherence to the CICEF recommendations.

A complaint alleging substandard construction has also been filed with the Lokayukta, adding further delays. With the jetty still unusable, fishermen say they face significant difficulties berthing boats, unloading catch, and carrying out daily operations, severely impacting their livelihoods.

They have urged the government, fisheries department, and port authorities to prioritise completion of the jetty reconstruction and ensure smooth, safe functioning of the port.
