HONNAVAR, July 2: A major landslide occurred near the Ramatirth curve in Honnavar taluk, where a portion of a hill collapsed onto the National Highway, severely disrupting vehicular movement for a considerable period. Fortunately, no vehicles were passing by at the exact moment of the collapse, preventing a potential catastrophic accident.

Continuous torrential rains pounding the coastal region over the last two days had loosened the soil, causing it to suddenly cave in onto the busy highway. Locals and regular commuters have expressed outrage, alleging that besides the heavy downpour, the unscientific cutting of the hill during the highway widening project by the IRB infrastructure company is the primary reason behind these recurring landslides. They blamed the gross negligence of the contracting agency for creating such hazardous conditions.

Following the landslide, traffic on one side of the national highway ground to a halt, leading to a brief gridlock. Upon receiving information, highway department officials and local police rushed to the spot to assess the situation. Earthmovers and heavy machinery were deployed to clear the debris and mud from the asphalt, eventually restoring traffic flow.
