MANGALURU: In a powerful display of self-reliance, the fishing community of Ullal has launched Karnataka’s first-ever Boat Ambulance. Tired of waiting for government promises to materialize, the local fishermen pooled resources to ensure that no life is lost at sea due to a lack of timely medical intervention.
A Lifeline Amidst the Waves: Fishing is one of the most hazardous professions, with over 5 lakh families in the 320-km coastal belt of Karnataka depending on it. Given the unpredictability of the sea and frequent technical failures, several lives are lost every year because victims couldn’t reach the shore in time. This boat ambulance aims to bridge that “Golden Hour” gap at sea.

Key Features & Infrastructure: Built at a cost of ₹16 lakh through donations and the collective efforts of the Country Boat and Gillnet Fishermen’s Association, the ambulance is a mini-hospital on water.
- Emergency Gear: Equipped with oxygen cylinders, stretchers, medical kits, and sirens.
- Rescue Capacity: The vessel can carry up to 30 people during a mass rescue operation.
- Expert Team: A dedicated team of 15 skilled rescuers and navigators will be stationed at the Ullal jetty to respond to distress calls.
This initiative is a wake-up call for the administration, proving that community action can solve long-pending safety issues.
