Bengaluru, April 16, 2026: The Karnataka High Court has directed the State Government to award marks instead of grades for third language subjects, including Hindi, in the SSLC examinations conducted by the KSEAB starting from the current academic year.

Justice E.S. Induresh, presiding over a single-judge bench, delivered the verdict following a petition filed by Sahana R. Naik from Chikkamagaluru and two other students. The petitioners challenged the government’s last-minute decision to implement a grading system for the third language.

Arguments in Court: Advocate R.V. Naik, representing the students, argued that central government recruitment agencies, UPSC, and banking sectors strictly consider numerical marks rather than grades. He emphasized that shifting to a grading system at the last moment would adversely affect the future career prospects of students from Karnataka. He noted that earlier circulars from KSEAB had stipulated a 100-mark format (80 written + 20 internal), which should be maintained.

The government counsel stated that only a draft notification had been issued so far. After hearing both sides, the court ruled that according to existing guidelines, the government must provide marks for third language subjects for the 2025-2026 SSLC exams.
