Karwar, February 24, 2026: In a major crackdown, the Excise Department officials seized alcohol and two tankers worth approximately ₹90 lakh being smuggled into Goa using forged documents. The operation took place at the Ramanagar toll gate on the Dharwad-Goa National Highway in Joida taluk on February 21.

One tanker was found carrying 30,000 litres of liquid declared as ‘Denatured Rectified Spirit’ from Davanagere Sugar Company, while the other was transporting 20,000 litres of ‘Ethanol’ from Sri Sai Traders. However, acting on a tip-off and under the guidance of Joint Commissioner A.L. Nagesh and Deputy Commissioner Amanullah Khan, the officials intercepted the vehicles. On-site testing by a primary distillery chemist using an alcohol meter confirmed the substance was actually ‘Extra Neutral Alcohol’ (ENA).

The department has arrested the tanker drivers, Magnar Singh from Madhya Pradesh and Dharmappa Kattimani from Gadag, and they have been remanded to judicial custody. The seized 50,000 litres of alcohol is valued at ₹40 lakh, while the two tankers are estimated to be worth ₹50 lakh. Separate cases have been registered by the Yellapur and Dandeli Excise units for further investigation.
