Kundapura, June 25: Opposing the central government’s move to privatize the power sector, the CPI(M) Kundapura Taluk Committee staged a protest in front of the MESCOM office on LIC Road here on Thursday. The protestors strongly demanded that private firms like Tata Power should not be granted licenses for parallel electricity distribution in the state, and submitted a memorandum addressed to the KERC through MESCOM officials.

Addressing the gathering, CPM District Secretary Suresh Kallagara stated that Tata Power has applied for parallel power distribution licenses under the Electricity Act 2003 across 19 revenue districts under BESCOM, CHESCOM, MESCOM, HESCOM, and GESCOM limits. He urged the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) to outright reject these corporate applications to safeguard public sector entities.

District leader H. Narasimha criticized the Narendra Modi-led union government, alleging that the introduction of the Electricity Amendment Bill aims to dismantle state distribution companies and progressively phase out cross-subsidies that benefit poor consumers.
