KUNDAPURA: In a major monsoon-induced mishap, a huge branch of a massive Peepal (Ashwatha) tree snapped under heavy wind and rain, flattening a succession of eight electricity poles near the local fish market area within the municipality limits on Tuesday night.

The fallen branch severely struck the primary 11 KV high-tension power line that supplies electricity to the fish market surroundings, Rama Mandir area, New Bus Stand grid, and Kharvikeri sectors. In several spots along the road, the utility poles snapped directly from their concrete base. The extensive wreckage resulted in a prolonged power blackout and supply disruptions across major residential and commercial sectors of Kundapura town. On Wednesday, MESCOM technical teams and field staff executed a day-long emergency restoration drive to clear the heavy logs and install replacement poles to restore the power supply.
