Kundapura, April 09, 2026: Venkatesh Koni (74), the State Vice President of the Karnataka Prantha Krishi Koolikarara Sangha and General Secretary of the Udupi District unit, passed away on Thursday after battling a prolonged illness for two years.

A Life of Struggle: Hailing from Koni village in Kundapura, Venkatesh Koni was the prominent voice of agricultural laborers in the coastal region. He joined the Communist movement to fight against the atrocities of landlords and was at the forefront of several land reforms struggles. His commitment to the cause was such that he even survived a brutal acid attack during his years of activism.

Legacy in Activism: A loyal worker of the CPI(M), he served as a former member of the Udupi District Secretariat. Under the leadership of Venkatesh Koni, along with Dasu Bhandary and Dogu Suvarna, the historic struggle for the landless in Udupi district created a new chapter in social justice movements.

Final Act of Service – Body Donation: In a final testament to his progressive values and social commitment, Venkatesh Koni had willed his body to Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, for medical research.
