Udupi, April 26, 2026: Following intense protests by villagers and farmers against unscientific sand mining in Nagaramatha, Hosala village, the Karnataka Lokayukta police conducted a detailed spot inspection. The team was led by Lokayukta SP Dinesh Kumar B.P. from the Mangaluru division.

During the visit on Wednesday and Thursday, the officials investigated allegations of illegal activities along the Seetha River. It was observed that while permission was granted for mining only up to a depth of one meter, contractors were reportedly digging 3 to 4 meters deep. Villagers complained that this excessive mining has caused groundwater in local wells to turn salty. Additionally, the police looked into reports of tipper trucks transporting double the quantity of sand mentioned in their official trip sheets.

On Friday, the Lokayukta office in Udupi recorded detailed statements from six protesters, including a woman. The contractor, Kusha Kumar, was also summoned for questioning. As a direct impact of this investigation, sand mining activities at the site came to a complete halt on Saturday. Local residents expressed relief as the movement of hundreds of trucks stopped.
