Mangaluru, April 17: A local court has delivered a significant judgment regarding the lathi charge incident that occurred in front of the City Police Commissioner’s office on April 4, 2017. The court has ordered the release and acquittal of all 101 accused individuals involved in the case.

The incident stemmed from allegations that the police had illegally detained one Ahmed Qureshi in connection with a murder case in the district and committed atrocities against him without producing him before the court. In response, activists from various organizations attempted to lay siege to the Police Commissioner’s office in protest. After the situation turned tense, stone-pelting was alleged to have occurred, leading the Pandeshwar Police Station to register three separate cases against several individuals, with a final report filed against 101 people. Two of these cases were being heard in the Second JMFC Court, while another was under trial in the District and Sessions Court.

The judge observed that the prosecution failed to prove the allegations against the accused and subsequently acquitted them from the case. The accused were represented by advocates from Lex Juris, Mangaluru, including Asif Baikady, Mufida Rahman, Irshad Sakhafi Montepadavu, Ayaz Charmadi, Muhammad Adil, Nishan M.K., Rubina, and Anseena.
