Kathmandu, March 28, 2026: Nepal’s former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was arrested early Saturday morning at his residence in Kathmandu. The arrest is linked to his alleged role in the deaths of dozens of protesters during the youth-led anti-corruption uprising that toppled his government last year. Along with Oli, former Home Affairs Minister Ramesh Lekhak was also detained.

The arrests occurred less than 24 hours after the new Prime Minister, Balendra Shah (popularly known as Balen), and his cabinet took office. Shah, a former rapper who won a landslide victory, had promised justice for the victims of last year’s ‘Gen Z’ protests. The unrest began in September last year over a social media ban and systemic corruption, leading to a police crackdown that killed 19 people initially, with the death toll eventually reaching at least 77.

Oli, 74, who suffers from kidney issues, was reportedly taken to a hospital following his detention. A government-backed investigation report recommended a 10-year prison sentence for Oli and Lekhak for their negligence during the crackdown. “No one is above the law. This is not revenge; it is just the beginning of justice,” stated the newly appointed Home Minister Sudan Gurung.
