UDUPI: The Hiriyadka police have arrested a woman and her husband on charges of misappropriating Rs 23 lakh and cheating the Padma Kamala Sanjeevini Gram Panchayat Level Federation in Perdoor village. The arrested individuals have been identified as Sugandhi, who worked as the head bookkeeper of the federation, and her husband, Santhosh.

According to the police, Sugandhi committed the fraud during her tenure at the federation between 2023 and 2025. Although she recorded the loan repayments made by members into the official register, she allegedly failed to deposit the cash into the federation’s bank account and misused the funds. Furthermore, the investigation revealed that she forged the signatures of the federation’s president and secretary on bank checks under the names of various sub-groups to withdraw money. To avoid detection during audits, she also maintained separate, fabricated loan account books. Through these manipulative tactics, she caused a loss of Rs 23 lakh to the institution.

Following a formal complaint, a case was registered at the Hiriyadka police station. The police tracked down and arrested Sugandhi and Santhosh on July 6. Preliminary investigations confirmed that the couple forged signatures and documents of various members, and further police investigation is underway.
