Kundapura/Shivamogga, February 28, 2026: A major tragedy was averted on Saturday afternoon after a private bus (Sri Durgamba) traveling from Kundapura to Shivamogga caught fire in the Hulikal Balebare Ghat section. Thanks to the quick thinking and alertness of the bus driver and conductor, all 35 passengers on board managed to escape unhurt.

The incident occurred on the main road near the waterfalls in the Hulikal Ghat. According to reports, smoke and fire were first noticed in the front section of the engine while the bus was navigating the hilly terrain. The driver immediately pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and directed all passengers to deboard instantly. Within moments of the evacuation, the flames engulfed the entire vehicle, reducing it to a charred skeletal frame.

Videos of the bus being completely consumed by fire have since gone viral on social media, captured by locals and passing commuters. While the vehicle was completely destroyed in the inferno, no casualties or injuries were reported. Local police and fire department officials arrived at the scene to assess the situation and clear the resulting traffic congestion in the sensitive forest route.
