Chennai, April 19, 2026: A comprehensive report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Tamil Nadu Election Watch (TNEW) has revealed that criminalization of politics and immense wealth remain dominant themes in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections. Released on Sunday, the report highlights that 404 candidates have declared serious criminal cases pending against them, while a total of 722 candidates face various criminal charges.

Party-wise Criminal Background: The analysis shows a significant presence of candidates with criminal backgrounds across all major political parties. Out of 170 candidates from AIADMK, 60 have serious criminal cases. In the newly formed TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam), 43 out of 231 analyzed candidates are facing serious charges. DMK has 32 such candidates out of 175 analyzed. The BJP (9 out of 33), INC (5 out of 28), and PMK (6 out of 18) also feature candidates with high-stakes legal cases. Serious criminal cases involve non-bailable offences, charges of murder, rape, kidnapping, or crimes against women and children.

Wealth and Assets: The financial analysis paints a picture of a billionaire-heavy election. Out of 3,992 candidates analyzed, 981 are crorepatis. Twenty-two candidates have declared assets valued at more than ₹100 crore. Leema Rose Martin, the AIADMK candidate from Lalgudi, is the wealthiest with assets totaling approximately ₹5,863 crore. TVK leader C. Joseph Vijay ranks second with declared assets of ₹648 crore, followed by TVK’s Villivakkam candidate Aadhav Arjuna with ₹534 crore.

Jayaram Venkatesan, State Coordinator of Arappor Iyakkam, remarked that political parties have disregarded Supreme Court directives regarding candidate selection, as roughly 18% of candidates still possess criminal records. The report also noted a positive trend in gender representation from the Naam Tamilar Katchi, where 50% of the fielded candidates are women. TNEW and ADR have analyzed 3,992 out of 4,023 affidavits, with some excluded due to technical issues like poor scanning.
