UDUPI: As many as 12 new Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) have been sanctioned for Udupi district. Under the state government’s flagship initiative, these schools will be equipped with modern infrastructure with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). All these upgraded schools will be constructed using a uniform architectural design.

The Karnataka Public Schools were established to provide quality education from LKG to Class 12 within a single campus, especially catering to poor and middle-class students in rural and urban areas. Currently, 9 KPS schools are operating successfully in Udupi district, with a total student strength of 7,927.

The newly sanctioned 12 government schools to be upgraded into KPS institutions are located in Bajagoli, Bailoor, Hebri, Udyavara, Rajeevanagar, Olakadu, Board High School, Manoor, Basrur, Amasebailu, Siddapura, and Uppunda.

State-of-the-Art Facilities: To compete with private institutions, these 12 upgraded schools will feature standardized well-equipped classrooms, modern science and computer laboratories, libraries, and playgrounds. To facilitate funding, officials from the Asian Development Bank have already conducted a field survey in the district and prepared a detailed project report.

Rise in Enrolment: Amid the growing influence of private English medium schools, KPS institutions in Udupi have successfully attracted students. In the 2026-27 academic year, the existing 9 KPS schools recorded an enrolment of 4,012 boys and 3,915 girls. Among these, the KPS at HRS Brahmavar stands first in terms of admissions, followed by the Hiriadka school in second place.

Brahmavar KPS: 1,498 students
Bidkalkatte KPS: 1,184 students
Muniyalu KPS: 1,117 students
Hiriadka KPS: 1,028 students
Koteshwara KPS: 964 students
Kokkarne KPS: 788 students
Hosmaru KPS: 510 students
Padubidri KPS: 487 students
Vandse KPS: 351 students

According to official data, the class-wise breakdown includes 336 students in LKG, 319 in UKG, 315 in Class 1, 369 in Class 2, 436 in Class 3, 478 in Class 4, 526 in Class 5, 628 each in Class 6 and 7, 824 in Class 8, 793 in Class 9, and 992 in Class 10. Additionally, 828 students are pursuing 1st PUC, and 848 students are studying in 2nd PUC.
