Udupi, February 24, 2026: The Udupi District Congress Committee organized a massive protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Tuesday, condemning the Central Government’s decision to withdraw the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme.

The protesters launched a foot march from Manipal’s Coin Circle to the DC office, raising slogans against the Union Government. A memorandum addressed to the Centre was later submitted through the Deputy Commissioner.

Addressing the gathering, KPCC Campaign Committee President Vinay Kumar Sorake criticized the move, stating that the UPA government had introduced MGNREGA to provide a livelihood for the rural poor. He accused the current government of snatching away the rights of the underprivileged by altering pro-poor schemes. Sorake emphasized that a struggle similar to the farmers’ agitation would be necessary to save the scheme.

Former Minister Jayaprakash Hegde, District Congress President Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, Coastal Development Authority Chairman M.A. Gafoor, and leaders like Uday Kumar Shetty, Prasad Raj Kanchan, Dinesh Hegde Molahalli, and Kishan Hegde Kolkebail were present at the protest.
