Udupi, April 13, 2026: A local court in Udupi has acquitted a 29-year-old woman who was accused of murdering her four-year-old daughter, Ayesha, by drowning her in a bucket of water. The II Additional District and Sessions Judge, A. Samiulla, delivered the judgment, stating that the prosecution failed to prove the guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

The incident dates back to April 10, 2020, in Malpe. According to records, the child reportedly fell into a water bucket while being taken for a bath by her mother. Although she initially recovered, she was found unconscious later that night and was declared brought dead at KMC Hospital, Manipal.

The prosecution initially alleged that the mother committed the crime to hide a purported gold theft. However, during the trial, 17 witnesses were examined, many of whom turned hostile. Some witnesses even admitted that their statements were influenced by the police. The court noted that medical evidence confirmed drowning as the cause of death but could not determine if it was accidental or homicidal.

The judge observed that the “chain of circumstances was broken” and emphasized that mere suspicion, no matter how strong, cannot replace solid proof. Consequently, the woman was acquitted of all charges and ordered to be released.
