Udupi, January 31, 2026: The Udupi District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T.K. has issued an order declaring a complete ban on the sale of liquor (dry day) in Gangolli and Gujjadi gram panchayat limits on February 4, 2026, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 midnight, in view of the annual Maari Jatre at Shri Mahankali Ammanavara Temple, Kharvikeri, Gangolli.
The order, issued under the Karnataka Excise Act, 1965 (Rule 21) and Karnataka Excise (Sale of Indian and Foreign Liquor) Rules, 1968 (Rule 3), cites the need to maintain law and order and public peace during the major religious event.
According to the notification (Reference: SP Udupi letter No. 22/SB/General/UJ/2026 dated 28-01-2026), the Maari Jatre is scheduled from February 3 to February 6, 2026. On February 4, thousands of devotees from Gangolli, Gujjadi, Manki, Trasi, Hemmadi, Kundapur, Maravanthe, Shirur, Bhatkal, and other areas — particularly from the Kharvi community — are expected to participate in the religious rituals, including harake (vows) and pooja from 8:00 AM until late night.
The police superintendent highlighted that Gangolli is a communally sensitive area with schools and residential zones located in the heart of the town. With large crowds expected, there is a risk of liquor-induced disturbances if bars, restaurants, and wine shops remain open. Hence, the complete suspension of liquor sales has been ordered in the specified gram panchayat areas on the key day of the jatre.
All licensed bars, restaurants, and wine shops in Gangolli and Gujjadi must remain closed and refrain from selling alcohol during the notified period. The order directs immediate enforcement by the police and excise authorities.
