Udupi, March 16, 2026: A major gas leak scare gripped Katapady after a gas tanker belonging to Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) overturned on the National Highway early Monday morning. The tanker, which was traveling from Mangaluru towards Udupi, reportedly lost control near a road diversion.

Following reports of a gas leak from the overturned vehicle, Fire and Emergency Services personnel rushed to the spot to prevent any potential fire hazard and secure the area. As a precautionary measure, Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T.K. has ordered a complete diversion of traffic on the Mangaluru–Udupi stretch until 8:00 PM tonight to ensure public safety.

Traffic Diversion Details:

From Mangaluru to Udupi: Vehicles are advised to travel via Kaup – Shirva – Moodubelle – Manipura – Manipal or take the Padubidri – Belman – Shirva – Manipal route.
From Udupi to Mangaluru: Commuters should take the route via Manipal – Manipura – Moodubelle – Shirva – Kaup or travel through the Manipal – Shirva – Belman – Padubidri stretch.
