UDUPI: Heavy rains accompanied by destructive gale-force winds continue to lash across Udupi district, causing widespread structural damage and crop loss over the past 24 hours. According to reports from the District Disaster Management Control Room, more than 40 residential houses have sustained moderate to severe damage, while three cattle sheds and extensive horticultural plantations at three different locations have been heavily wrecked. Though the intensity of the downpour marginally decreased, the fierce wind gusts uprooted large trees, crashing them onto houses and farms.

In Karkala taluk’s Marne village, a cattle shed belonging to Sukumar Hegde collapsed entirely, racking up losses evaluated at over ₹2.5 lakh. Partial damage was reported to the cattle sheds of Gowri Poojarthi in Kota and Ananda Rama in Beloor. Furthermore, horticultural fields owned by Sadananda Shetty and Narayana Shetty in Siddapura, alongside Krishna Naik’s farm in Shivapura (Hebri), suffered heavy losses as multiple commercial arecanut and banana trees were uprooted.

The total financial loss incurred due to residential damage across the district is pegged at around ₹11 lakh, with over 10 properties categorized as heavily damaged. Regionally, Brahmavar taluk bore the maximum brunt with 18 reported house damage cases, followed by Kundapura with 12 cases, Karkala with 4, Byndoor with 3, and Kaup and Hebri logging 2 cases each. In Uppunda, a massive tree collapsed onto Lakshman Kharvi’s house, resulting in losses exceeding ₹1 lakh, while properties belonging to Shakuntala in Belve and Sanjeeva Shetty in Ajri incurred damages up to ₹50,000 each.

Rainfall Statistics: The district recorded an overall average rainfall of 52.3 mm for the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 AM on Tuesday. Hebri taluk received the highest localized downpour in the district. The complete territorial division breakdown includes:
