Udupi, September 29, 2025 – Udupi Women (39), fell victim to an online fraud, losing Rs 4,20,651 after being lured by a fake investment scheme on Instagram. A case has been registered at Udupi City Police Station under Crime No. 184/2025, Sections 318(4) BNS and 66(D) IT Act.

On December 31, 2024, while searching for online jobs at home, victim came across a video on the ‘Afreen Halaal Investment’ Instagram profile promising high returns on investments. She messaged the profile for details, receiving WhatsApp messages from 947795*** showing transaction screenshots of others profiting from trading.

Believing the claims, Victim transferred Rs 2,000 initially via the provided QR code. When inquiring about profits, the accused claimed taxes applied for first-time investors and urged more investment for higher gains. Victim then sent Rs 8,055.

Further demands for “tax, wallet, and other charges” led to brainwashing, resulting in a total transfer of Rs 4,20,651. The accused vanished after the final payment.

Police have registered the case and are investigating to trace the scammer.
