Udupi: In a major move to modernize traffic enforcement, the Udupi district police are transitioning to a ‘contactless system’ for monitoring traffic violations. Within the next three months, 150 high-end surveillance cameras will be installed at strategic locations across the district to track offenders digitally.
Automated Enforcement: The new system aims to reduce physical intervention by police officers on the road. According to Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, the cameras will specifically target rash driving, signal jumping, and motorists driving without seatbelts. “We will establish a dedicated Traffic Automation Centre. Similar to the system in Mangaluru, traffic enforcement in Udupi will soon become contactless,” the SP told the media.

Upgraded Junctions and Pedestrian Safety: The Udupi City Municipal Council is set to install new traffic signals at the busy Ambagilu and Balaipadi junctions on National Highway 66 within two weeks. These junctions, currently regulated by manual barricades, will now feature timed signals to streamline vehicle flow. The plan includes a 20-second window for pedestrians to safely cross the highway at these busy points. Other areas, including Brahmavar, Kota, Padubidri, and Kundapura, will also see similar signal installations.
Collaborative Funding: The project is being funded through Road Safety Funds from the Central and State governments. Additionally, the Udupi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCI) has stepped forward to fund regular CCTV installations at crucial spots to enhance overall public safety and crime monitoring in the district.
