Udupi: Special Drive Against Buses Without Doors and Lorries Without Speed Governors; Fines Imposed on 108 Buses, 56 Lorries

Udupi, January 28, 2026: Following decisions taken at the District Road Safety Authority meeting, Udupi police have launched a special enforcement drive against buses operating without proper doors and lorries transporting sand, stone, and soil without speed governors. In the first phase of the operation on Wednesday, fines were imposed on 108 buses and 56 lorries for various violations.

Police inspected a total of 1,100 buses across the district. Among them, around 108 buses were penalised for violations including operating without doors (a mandatory safety requirement) and other traffic rule breaches.

Similarly, 1,352 vehicles carrying sand, stone, and soil were checked. Of these, 56 vehicles were fined for offences such as overloading and failure to install speed governors.

Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar stated: “The deadline given to bus owners to fit doors and to sand transport vehicle owners to install speed governors has ended. Police have now begun strict enforcement. These drives will continue in phases to implement the decisions of the District Road Safety Authority and Road Transport Authority under the leadership of the Deputy Commissioner.”

A meeting with city bus owners has been scheduled for January 29 at 3:00 PM at the Deputy Commissioner’s office to discuss bus timings and other related issues.

The enforcement drive aims to enhance road safety by ensuring compliance with vehicle fitness standards, particularly on highways and routes prone to accidents involving overloaded or non-compliant commercial vehicles.
