Udupi, May 01, 2026: A district court in Udupi has sentenced two men to life imprisonment for the attempted murder of a woman in Manchikumari four years ago. The convicts had attempted to strangle the woman and transport her body in a suitcase.

The convicts have been identified as Mithun and Nagesh Poojary, both residents of Belthangady.

Case Background: On February 18, 2022, when Sumathi, the wife of Ramanath Rai, was alone at home, her nephew Mithun and his friend Nagesh visited her. Taking advantage of their acquaintance, the duo entered the house and attempted to strangle her with the intent to kill. After Sumathi lost consciousness, the accused stuffed her into a gunny bag and placed her inside a suitcase to dispose of the body.

The plan was foiled when Ramanath Rai and neighbors arrived and knocked on the door. Although the suspects tried to flee, they were apprehended by the public and handed over to the Manipal police. Sumathi was found unconscious inside the suitcase and was rushed to KMC Hospital, where she recovered after a week of treatment.

Court Verdict: After a detailed trial, Principal District and Sessions Judge Kiran S. Gangannavar found the accused guilty. The court sentenced them to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹20,000
