Byndoor, September 20, 2025 – Kapu police have arrested Mohammed Aasif (35), a key accused in the notorious Garuda gang cases that terrorized Karnataka in 2019-20, who had been absconding and mocking the law by evading court appearances. The arrest took place on Friday in Gauri Kaluve, Chikkamagaluru city, where Aasif, a resident of Muslimkeri, Badakere, Navunda village in Byndoor taluk, Udupi district, was hiding.

Aasif, son of M. Mohammed Haneef, faces multiple cases across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. In Kapu Police Station Crime No. 107/2020 under IPC Sections 143, 148, 448, 323, 324, 354, 506, 424, 307, and 149, the case (SC No. 18/2020) is pending in the Second Additional District and Sessions Court, Udupi. He has been avoiding court hearings since February 2025.

Cases are also registered at Gangolli PS (4 cases), Byndoor PS (2 cases), Kankanady PS, Mangalore (2 cases), and Uppinangadi PS (2 cases), all pending trial. An LPC warrant (No. 2/1972) was issued for non-appearance.

Based on intelligence, Kapu police team—HC 137 Mohammed Rafiq, CPC 1222 Mohan Chandra, and CPC 113 Ganesh Shetty—traveled to Chikkamagaluru on September 18, 2025, and apprehended Aasif. Under the guidance of Assistant SP Dr. Harsha Priyamvada (IPS, Karkala Subdivision), CPI Jayashree S. Mane (Kapu Circle), and PSI Tejaswi T.I. (Kapu PS), he was produced before the Second Additional District and Sessions Judge, Udupi, who remanded him to judicial custody until October 16, 2025. He has been lodged in Hiriyadka Sub-Jail.
