Bengaluru, February 24, 2026: The Karnataka High Court has issued a stern directive to the State Government to ensure that both the complaint and the counter-complaint in any criminal case are investigated by a single investigating officer. Justice M. Nagaprasanna, while hearing a petition involving an attempted murder case from Shikaripura, warned that any violation of this rule would lead to contempt of court proceedings against the government.

The court expressed its dismay over the repeated appointment of two different officers for cases involving counter-complaints. It noted that despite the law being clear and the state government having already issued a circular in this regard, the rule is often ignored at the ground level. The bench highlighted that having different officers leads to conflicting conclusions—where one officer might file a ‘B’ report (closure report) while the other files a charge sheet for the same incident.

In the present case concerning a property dispute in Kalmane village, the court observed that the lack of a single investigating officer failed to meet the requirements of the law. Consequently, the High Court ordered a fresh investigation by a single officer to be completed within one month, while cautioning the competent authority against repeating such lapses in the future.
