Kundapura, April 29, 2026: The Karnataka High Court has issued an interim stay on the construction of a high-voltage power transmission line passing through agricultural lands in Salvadi, Kalavara, and Asodu villages of Kundapura taluk.

A bench led by Justice K.S. Hemalekha passed this order on April 16, following a writ petition filed by 22 farmers, including veteran activist Ramachandra Navada and the Kalavara Gram Panchayat. The farmers challenged the 2018 KPTCL notification, stating that the proposed “Route No. 1” would cause extensive damage to fertile coconut and areca nut plantations. They alleged that despite having alternative routes, the authorities were intentionally targeting agricultural lands.

The court has strictly prohibited the respondents, including contractors and officials, from entering the petitioners’ land, cutting trees, or constructing towers until further notice. It further ordered that the petitioners should not be evicted from their properties while the writ petition is pending. Notices have been issued to the Union and State governments, KPTCL, and the District Collector, with the next hearing scheduled for June 4.
