Kaup, April 17, 2026: A tragic road accident claimed the life of a Manipal student in the early hours of Friday near the Vidyavardhaka School in Pangala on National Highway 66.

The deceased has been identified as Shreyas Acharya, a student from Manipal. Two other occupants of the car, Darwin and Surya, sustained injuries and are currently undergoing medical treatment. All three are reportedly students based in Manipal.

The accident occurred when their car, traveling from Mangaluru toward Udupi at a high speed, crashed into the rear end of a truck. The truck was returning to Ginigera in Koppal district after loading coke at the Mangaluru port.

The impact was so severe that the front right portion of the car was completely mangled, trapping Shreyas Acharya in the driver’s seat. Although he was rescued and rushed to the Ajjarkad Government Hospital in Udupi, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Officials from the Kaup Police Station visited the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered regarding the incident, and further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.
