Manipal, April 17, 2026: A rescue operation to capture a leopard that had fallen into a well at Tangode, under the 80 Badagubettu limits, ended in failure as the animal managed to escape from the net and flee into the surroundings. The operation was conducted by Forest Department personnel with the assistance of local residents.

Upon receiving reports of the leopard being trapped in the well, forest officials arrived with nets and a cage. As they attempted to pull the leopard out, the animal refused to enter the cage. Instead, it managed to leap through the net, narrowly rushing past the spot where forest officials were standing, and escaped into the dense bushes.

The escape of the leopard has heightened fear and anxiety among the residents of Tangode and nearby areas. Locals reported that leopard sightings have become frequent in Manipal and Parkala, where the felines often enter human settlements to prey on pet dogs and poultry. Similar incidents of leopard attacks have also been reported in the Brahmavar region.

Public frustration is mounting against the Forest Department. Residents have alleged that officials often demand CCTV footage or photographs as proof rather than acting swiftly on complaints.
