Pakistan Confirms Selective Boycott Of T20 World Cup 2026 Clash Against India

Colombo, February 1, 2026: In a major development ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, the Government of Pakistan has officially confirmed that the national team will boycott its scheduled group-stage match against India on February 15 at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) received formal approval from the government to participate in the tournament (February 7 to March 8, co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India), but with a clear condition: the Salman Ali Agha-led side will not take the field against India.

The announcement was made via the official X account of the Government of Pakistan:

“The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan grants approval to the Pakistan Cricket Team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026, however, the Pakistan Cricket Team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15th February 2026 against India.”

The decision follows weeks of speculation and internal discussions, including a meeting between PCB Chairman and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Pakistan had earlier voiced strong resentment over the ICC’s refusal to allow Bangladesh to play its matches in Sri Lanka (leading to Bangladesh’s replacement by Scotland in the tournament), which was cited as a contributing factor in the boycott debate.

This move marks a sensational twist in India–Pakistan cricketing relations, which have remained strained since the 2023 ODI World Cup. The two teams are currently competing against each other in the ongoing ICC U19 World Cup in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

Historical Precedent Selective boycotts of individual matches in ICC tournaments have occurred before:

  • 1996 Cricket World Cup: Australia and West Indies refused to play Sri Lanka due to security concerns.
  • 2003 Cricket World Cup: England boycotted Zimbabwe, and New Zealand boycotted Kenya over security and political issues.

In each case, the boycotting teams forfeited points (usually two), and no further action was taken against them.

Implications Under the hybrid model agreement signed last year between the PCB, ICC, and BCCI (ahead of the Champions Trophy), India and Pakistan are not required to travel to each other’s country for bilateral or ICC events. All Pakistan matches in the T20 World Cup 2026 will now be played in Sri Lanka, avoiding any travel to India.

The PCB has not yet commented on how the boycott of the India match will affect points, group standings, or qualification scenarios. The ICC is expected to issue a statement soon.
