NEW DELHI: High drama unfolded inside a Supreme Court courtroom on Friday when a litigant, appearing in person, adopted a highly aggressive stance, ordered the judges to rule in his favor, and subsequently flung case documents into the air while shouting abuses. The individual was immediately overpowered and escorted out of the courtroom by Supreme Court security personnel.

However, taking a compassionate view of the situation, the Supreme Court later let off the individual without pressing criminal charges or contempt proceedings, considering his medical and mental condition.

The Confrontation: The incident transpired before a division bench comprising Justices K.V. Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe during the hearing of a petition challenging an order passed by the Allahabad High Court. Right at the beginning of the proceedings, the petitioner shocked the courtroom with his disrespectful vocabulary.

“Mr judicial servant. I order you to order the registration of an FIR against the ACP of Lucknow,” the complainant asserted aggressively. Taken aback by the remarks, Justice Viswanathan interjected, asking, “You are ordering me? You are ordering us?” To this, the litigant dismissively responded, “That is all from my side. Everything is on record.“

Contempt and Removal: The situation escalated rapidly thereafter as the petitioner tossed his entire stack of case files into the air toward the bench. According to legal news portals, he also began shouting abusive slurs targeted at the Chief Justice, though Chief Justice Surya Kant was not part of the active bench.

While court security officers swiftly intervened, pinned down the unruly litigant, and dragged him out of the premises to restore order, the bench maintained complete composure. Upon reviewing the entire episode and assessing the individual’s mental state and overall condition, the Supreme Court took a lenient, humanitarian view. Acknowledging that his aggressive behavior was likely triggered by his unstable health condition, the Apex Court decided to let the litigant off instead of punishing him for gross contempt of court.
