BYNDOOR: In the wake of ongoing monsoon risks, Udupi District Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T.K. on Monday visited and inspected the landslide-prone hill area along National Highway 66 at Ottinene in Byndoor taluk, which frequently disrupts vehicular movement during the rainy season.

During the widening of National Highway 66, the concessionaire company had cut open the Ottinene hill to construct the highway stretch. However, because the hill consists largely of loose clay soil, heavy downpours routinely trigger mudslides that spill directly onto the highway, bringing heavy traffic to a complete standstill and posing a hazard to commuters.

The Deputy Commissioner physically inspected the vulnerable spots on the hill and collected detailed inputs from the National Highway Authority engineers present at the site regarding current stabilization efforts. Speaking on the occasion, DC Swaroopa T.K. stated that a comprehensive safety report outlining necessary technical works to permanently secure the hill slope will be submitted to the government at the earliest.
