Udupi, April 20, 2026: The newly formed Udupi District Basketball Association, officially recognized by the Karnataka State Basketball Association, was inaugurated today at Madhava Kripa School in Manipal. Dr. H.S. Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), launched the association and unveiled its official logo.

Addressing the gathering, the association’s new District President, Prasadraj Kanchan, emphasized the mission to inspire and support talented youth from both urban and rural areas. “We aim to construct a high-quality synthetic basketball stadium in Udupi. Furthermore, we plan to host a state-level tournament within the next six months,” he announced. He added that the association intends to collaborate with prestigious educational institutions in the district to train athletes for state and national-level competitions.

In his inaugural address, Dr. H.S. Ballal noted that while cricket currently dominates the sports landscape, basketball deserves equal encouragement. He highlighted that MAHE already provides advanced facilities at Marina and MIT, and praised Madhava Kripa School for hosting the district-level tournament. International basketball player Jugan S. Dyaneswaran also spoke, expressing his hope to see 10–15 players from the region represent the national team in the future.
