UDUPI: Health and Family Welfare Minister UT Khader stated that doctors play an invaluable role in building a healthy society by prioritizing public health over their personal lives and saving numerous lives through selfless service. He was speaking at the second annual Doctors’ Day celebration organized by the Health Commission of the Udupi Diocese at the Ave Maria Hall of the Mother of Sorrows Church on Sunday.

The Minister emphasized that every doctor has the potential to bring about revolutionary changes in the world. He noted that they bear the responsibility of treating every patient with dignity. Describing the medical profession as sacred and noble, he urged the medical community to create awareness among people regarding healthy dietary habits to ensure a robust and healthy society.

Chief Guest Dr. H.S. Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), who inaugurated the event, highlighted that efforts must be made to bring the underprivileged into the mainstream through education and healthcare. He stated that MAHE has been working towards this for several years, providing discounted services through health cards to care for the poor. Dr. Ballal also launched the Manipal Health Security Card registration campaign for the year 2027 during the event.

Presiding over the program, Most Rev. Dr. Leslie Clifford D’Souza, Bishop of the Diocese, remarked that the medical profession is a sacred service rather than just a job, calling doctors the backbone of society. Expressing gratitude for their services in the diocese, he wished for their continued dedication. Dr. Jacintha D’Souza, retired Joint Director of the Health and Family Welfare Department, delivered the keynote address.

During the event, a new dental clinic department and a diabetes screening unit were inaugurated at Goretti Hospital in Santhekatte under the diocesan health commission. ECG machines were also handed over to two healthcare institutions. Zonal directors, conveners, and resource persons were honored on the occasion.

Retired Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo, Chancellor Rev. Stephen D’Souza, Dr. Nagarathna Shastri from the health department, and Rev. Leo Praveen D’Souza, Assistant Parish Priest of Mother of Sorrows Church, were among those present. Health Commission Director Hilda Cornelio welcomed the gathering, Secretary Dr. Ren Dias rendered the vote of thanks, and Dr. Soni D’Costa compered the program.
