NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (July 7, 2026) directed the immediate restoration of the X (formerly Twitter) account of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), after the Union government informed the Bench that it no longer harbored any objection to unblocking the handle.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma passed the order while hearing a petition filed by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, who had legally challenged the central government’s administrative decision to withhold the satirical account within Indian jurisdiction.

Appearing on behalf of the Centre, Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta submitted before the court that the handle had been temporarily blocked as a precautionary safety measure ahead of the June 21 NEET re-test. He argued that certain updates published on the platform had the potential to trigger unnecessary confusion and panic among lakhs of medical aspirants and their parents during a critical period. However, since the examination process has concluded successfully, Mr. Mehta stated that the government has “no difficulty” if the X account is unblocked now. Taking note of this, Justice Sharma ordered, “Since NEET is already over, the primary concern is no longer of any relevance. In these circumstances, the blocking order is revoked. The petition is allowed.”

During the earlier round of legal proceedings, senior advocate Akhil Sibal, representing the petitioner Mr. Dipke, argued that the CJP’s content was “pure satire”. He contended that even if the regulatory authorities found any individual posts objectionable, they should have restricted only those specific links rather than completely withholding the entire account. The CJP had emerged on social media in May as a satirical digital movement following a controversy surrounding remarks made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. After its original X handle was withheld on May 21, the group launched an alternative account titled “Cockroach is Back”, which has since amassed over 2,82,000 followers.
